Pinterest for Shopify stores without the feed-dump look

The short answer

Install the Pinterest for Shopify app to get your catalogue onto Pinterest's shopping surfaces — it is free and it handles price and stock sync. Then build editorial pins on top of it, because the catalogue feed produces product-on-white images that compete badly in the main feed, where planning-intent searches actually happen.

Shopify's official Pinterest integration is genuinely good at one job and completely silent about the job it does not do. Worth being precise about which is which before building a strategy on it.

What the catalogue feed actually gives you

Install the Pinterest app in Shopify and it syncs your catalogue: products, images, prices, availability. From that you get product pins on Pinterest's shopping surfaces, prices that update when yours do, and stock that stops showing what you cannot sell.

That is real value and it costs nothing. Do it first.

What it does not give you

The feed produces one image per product, and that image is your product photo — usually on white, usually square-ish, framed for a product grid.

Pinterest's home and search feeds are not a product grid. They are a masonry column of 2:3 images competing on how much attention they hold, and tall pins are repinned around 60% more than square ones for the simple reason that they are on screen longer. A product-on-white square is the weakest possible entrant in that competition.

More importantly, the searches are different. Someone typing "brass table lamp" is close to buying and your catalogue pin serves them well. Someone typing "small living room lighting ideas" — a far larger query — is not going to be served a product-on-white, and that is where the volume is.

What to build on top

One editorial pin per product angle, at 1000 × 1500. For each product worth the effort, three or four distinct pins:

  • The product in a real room or on a real person, not on white.
  • A problem-framed pin: "lighting for a room with no overhead", not "Brass Table Lamp".
  • A comparison or scale pin, if size is a common question.
  • A seasonal or occasion pin, if the product has one.

Those are four fresh pins from one product, and they target four different searches instead of splitting one.

Pin collection pages, not only products. A collection URL survives a product being discontinued. Given that a pin keeps working for months after publication, the collection page is often the more valuable long-term destination even though it converts worse per click today.

Write titles for planning intent. Take the phrases from Pinterest's own guided search — the method is in Pinterest keyword research — not from your product taxonomy. Your taxonomy is a warehouse structure. Nobody searches a warehouse structure.

Attribution, and why your numbers will not match

Two systems will report Pinterest revenue and they will disagree, sometimes by a factor of two.

Pinterest counts a conversion within its own attribution window, including view-through. Shopify's acquisition report counts last-click sessions with UTM tags. Neither is wrong; they are answering different questions.

Practical resolution: tag every outbound link with UTMs, treat Shopify's number as the one you plan against, and treat Pinterest's as a directional read on which creative is working. Do not average them, and do not present both to anyone making a budget decision. Consistent UTMs are the whole basis of this — ours is here if you want a builder that enforces the same casing every time: UTM link builder.

The margin question, before you scale

Pinterest traffic is not free — it costs production time — but it is not a per-order fee, which is what makes it worth comparing directly against paid channels.

On Shopify the per-order costs are the subscription plus card processing: roughly 2.9% + 30¢ online on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on the mid plan, 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced through Shopify Payments, and a further 0.6–2% surcharge if you use a third-party gateway instead.

Two things follow. First, unlike a marketplace taking 6.5% plus ads, your margin on an organically sourced order is close to your gross margin — so the value of an organic channel is higher on Shopify than on Etsy in absolute terms. Second, if your contribution margin after shipping and returns is under about 25%, no organic channel fixes the business, and Pinterest is a distraction from pricing.

Work out where you actually stand with the Shopify profit margin calculator before committing a quarter to this.

Categories where this works, and where it does not

Being blunt saves people months.

Works: home and interiors, food, fashion and accessories, beauty, weddings, kids and baby, craft supplies, stationery, garden, gifting, anything with a "before and after".

Rarely works: B2B, industrial and trade supply, commodity electronics, replacement parts, regulated goods, anything bought on specification rather than on how it looks.

If you are in the second list, the honest advice is to spend the effort on the channel where your buyers actually are. Pinterest rewards categories where the decision is partly aesthetic, and no tactic substitutes for that.

Where automation earns its place

The repeatable parts are: rendering three or four 2:3 designs per product, writing distinct copy per angle, routing each pin to a sensible board, and spacing the schedule so one product is not pinned twice in a week.

BatchPin reads a Shopify store directly, takes active products with stock, carries the real price onto the pin, and skips archived products — and a re-scan keeps whatever selection you already made rather than resetting it. What it does not do, and what stays a human decision, is choosing which products deserve four pins and which deserve none.

Common questions

Does the Pinterest Shopify app do everything?

It does catalogue sync — products, prices, stock — which puts you on Pinterest's shopping surfaces and keeps prices honest. It does not produce editorial pins, and product-on-white images perform poorly in the main home and search feeds.

Should I pin product pages or collection pages?

Both. Collection pages survive individual products being discontinued, which matters because pins keep sending traffic for months. Product pages convert better while they exist.

How do I attribute Pinterest revenue in Shopify?

Tag outbound links with UTM parameters and read them in Shopify's acquisition reports. Pinterest's own analytics and Shopify's will disagree — different attribution windows — so pick one as your number and stay with it.

Is Pinterest worth it for a small Shopify store?

It depends far more on your category than your size. Home, food, fashion, wedding, kids, craft and gifting do well. Industrial supply, B2B software and commodity electronics do not, and no amount of pinning changes that.

Pinterest automation, built and run in-house

We build BatchPin, which publishes pins for blogs, Etsy shops, Shopify stores and app listings. Everything here comes from running that system — the Pinterest API's actual limits, what its rejections say, and what happens to a schedule when a source changes underneath it.
